MINNEAPOLIS — Looking to build a snowman or have a snowball fight? You’re better off visiting Florida than the Twin Cities this week!

After a rare winter storm dropped a significant amount of snow across the southern U.S. this week, much of the south is poised to end the month of January with higher snowfall totals than the Twin Cities metro area.

According to the National Weather Service, as of Jan. 23, the Twin Cities have received just 1.7 inches of snow so far in January 2025, with little additional snow in the forecast for the rest of the month.

Now, compare Minnesota to several cities across the south; here are a few of the snow totals from the past 72 hours from the National Weather Service:

  • Grand Coteau, Louisiana – 13.4″
  • Babbie, Alabama – 11.0″
  • Lafayette, Louisiana – 10.5″
  • Bay Springs, Florida – 10.0″
  • Milton, Florida – 9.8″

According to KARE 11 meteorologist John Zeigler, the Twin Cities has received just 9.8 inches of snow for the entire 2024-25 winter season so far, the same as the amount that Milton, Florida received just this week! The 13.4 inches in Grand Coteau, Louisiana is the same amount that St. Cloud has received for the entire season so far.

Several other major metro areas in the south also have the Twin Cities beat for snow this month, with Houston, Texas picking up about four inches of snow; Mobile, Alabama with 7.5 inches; Savannah, Georgia and Charleston, South Carolina with 3 inches; and a report of 9.4 inches in Pensacola, Florida.

Zeigler says the Twin Cities is nearly a foot and a half behind our average snowfall for this time of year, which is 26.9 inches. Our chances for more snow this month are looking low, Zeigler said, with temps potentially warming above freezing for the last week of January.
